The community has very few latrines and clean water and good sanitation are not available. Therefore a number of health conditions affect the community, including dental problems, respiratory tract infections and fungal infections of the feet, skin and oral thrush. These conditions have a serious impact on school attendance, perpetuating the cycle of poverty into the next generation.
What we are doing
- Providing treatment - Our team hold open access health sessions during which they test for and diagnose a number of conditions, including Malnutrition, Infections, hygiene and sanitation. We also provide treatment for these conditions.
- Building latrines - We have identified two areas of the community on which we will build public latrines. These will be free for the community to use, and will reduce re-infection rates.
- Educating the community - The easiest way is to distribute the tablets to children in school. Not all children are enrolled at school so accurate records are essential. In order to reduce re-infection rates, we are implementing an effective education programme to encourage the use of latrines or careful removal of faeces to prevent contamination of the soil.
