Children living on the streets of Kathmandu are some of the most marginalised in the World. They are mostly abhorred and mistreated by adults around them and are subject to all forms of physical and sexual abuse.
They often turn to solvent addiction and pick pocketing in their desperation.
Street children living there are surrounded by terrible conditions including flowing sewage and heaps of polythene bags. In some areas the crime rate is extremely high. It is under these conditions that the children we help have to survive. We work with a small local organisation which reaches out to these children.
What we are doing
- Reaching Out: We identify children who are vulnerable and living on the streets and invite them to take part in the Outreach Programme, which takes place twice per week at the Community Centre. At these sessions the children can bathe, receive medical treatment, counseling, clothing and education.
- The Day Care Centre: We fund a centre in Lazimpath which acts as a safe haven for the children during the day. Here the children also take part in literacy lessons, receive optional counselling and take part in fun recreational activities such as football, dancing and acrobatics. These skills are later used to help generate income for the children they help.
- Transitional Centre: Once space and funds become available then the next step is to take the child into our residential home where full rehabilitation occurs, this includes the child re-entering education and learning key skills.
